MG MGB Technical - Transmission rear oil seal questions

I'm replacing the rear oil seal on a spare late model transmission (rectangular cover, dip stick). I've removed the flange and now have a circular metal disc (which is flush with the end of the case) backed by what appears to be felt, as the next obstacle. I have two questions / concerns:

I don't see this part listed anywhere in my information. I have Moss part #121-120 as a replacement, but the new part has no metal surface and no felt. Maybe I'm looking at a substitution situation, but before I go ahead and remove the old one I thought I'd check.

Secondly, how is this part removed? I'm sure I could remove it by pulling or cutting but that would destroy it. Until I'm sure what this is I'm hesitant to damage it.

I'm also looking for suggestions on how the new seal should be installed.... lubrication, etc.

Any insight is as always appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Hello Brian.

I replaced it few years ago, and also the original was with some discombulated felt. A concept dating from Boer's war. Replacement from Moss has a lip of polymer and is easy to fit:

1- slightly grease the lid prior to installation
2- Be shure the is'nt any débris left from old seal
3-drive new seal with a wood block delicately and:

Voilà it's done

Brian,

I forgot to mention to use a larger than seal piece of wood to be certain to drive it straight in place.
