MG MGB Technical - Throttle return spring

1979 MGB with twin HIF carbs.

Should there be a throttle return spring other than the 2 springs on the throttle shaft? There is a hole in the quadrant on the throttle shaft and what appears to be a hole in the heat shield a few inches below it (but slightly to the side).
There are 2 srings attached to the choke shaft going to the heat shield but nothing from the throttle shaft.
Is this set up correct or am I missing something?
I am asking this as sometimes it takes ages for the idle speed to fall to tick over.

Cheers,

Adrian

I think you are missing a spring there. There should be another spring like on the choke.

You could use one of the choke springs on the throttle. I found my choke was really hard to pull with both springs anyway.

Your idle speed might be a different issue though. You should be able to see, spring or not, if the shaft isn't fully returning home when the throttle is released if you watch the linkages while someone else works the pedal for you.

The proper springs are very cool having a body with tapered ends and separate hooks that aren't attached to the spring part but instead free float inside the spring body. Always liked them!

In New Zealand I believe it is a legal requirement that a throttle has to have at least two springs to ensure it won't stick open.

Hi Adrian,

There should be two springs on the throttles, one to each of the carbs, not the shaft, and one to the choke's lever, on the shaft.
The first photo shows where the springs attach to the carby and the second shows how all the springs are attached.

Hi Again,

Sorry, the info in my previous post was for HS carby's, not HIFs.
