MG MGB Technical - Steering column UJs
Has anyone else been caught out by the undersized grease nipple on Moss UJs? The thread in the UJ is undersized as well so a standard nipple won't fit, and I haven't been able to find anything out about their size or suitable adapters. Fortunately it is an angled nipple, and the business end unscrews from the body screwed into the UJ, so I've been able to make an adapter that screws in to that body for greasing, which I then replace with the undersized nipple to keep dirt out.

I managed to get grease into a Cortina steering UJ (no nipples on these) by boiling it up in linklife (the stuff bikers use to lube chains). It's grease in a tin. You bung chain uj's what-ever in it pop it in the oven (when SWMBO is out) and hey-presto difficult to lube stuff is good as new.

Bit of a fag removing the UJ at every service, though ...

Too true, got the old girl through an MOT though. Sold the car 4 years 30,000 miles later without having to do it again. Prior to "boiling" you could feel a loose "click" from the joint.

My original u-joint lasted 43 years. I can't imagine it needing to be lubed on a regular basis. Unlike the driveshaft u-joints, it is under very little load and should last a lifetime. RAY
