MG MGB Technical - Starter motor terminal wiring

Hello,

Please can someone assist me.

I am just connecting the wiring loom to the starter motor. However I have an issue. I have read a previous thread which shows where the wires should connect and from what I can see the 3 brown wires and positive battery cable all go onto the one terminal - Firstly is this correct? Secondly, the wiring loom I have is new and comes with 2 brown wires with circular connections (with a hole to go over the thread on the starter motor terminal bolt), and one other brown wire with a female spade connector. Should there be a special connection for this (i.e. a circular hole to male spade connector)?

Many thanks,
Alex Davies

All the brown wires, with a circular connector, go on the starter motor solenoid stud. The female spade connector goes onto the male spade terminal on the starter motor solenoid. This wire goes to the ignition switch and it is energized when the ignition switch is turned to the "start" position. RAY

Not quite.
All browN go on the post with the batt cable. If there is/are N with female spade(s), then there should be an adaptor tab, usually with one big and one small end.

There should be a WR if the car does not have a starter relay, or a WN of it does, to operate the solenoid, goes on a male tab sticking out of the solenoid.

Late cars with ballasted coils have a W/LG, usually but not always with a male end to go in a female connector off the solenoid. (for some reason, some solenoids are supplied with a male tab for this connection, requiring that the wire end be changed, and leading to confusion with the operating tab)

Thanks, that's what I thought, so I need to get hold of an adapter tab. Thanks for your assistance

No I don't think you do need an adapter, unless there is a white/red or white/brown wire also with a female spade you haven't mentioned. The two bolt-through terminals go on the battery cable stud on the solenoid - one comes from the alternator and the other feeds the rest of the cars electrics. The wire with the female spade goes on the solenoid male spade and is the solenoid operate wire coming from the starter relay. That *should* be white/red on 68 and 69 models, white/brown from 70 to 76, and possibly white/red, white/brown or brown/white on 77 and later models as white/brown is used for the ignition relay. As always the year of the car helps, usually essential when electrics are being discussed.

As fas as ballasted systems go I've seen two male spades of different sizes on the solenoid so you can't get them mixed up, but rebuilds seem to come with two the same size. Not seen one male and one female - yet.
