MG MGB Technical - Setting Up a 66 MGB Choke Cable

I just installed a rebuilt engine in our 66 B. It started right up no problems. But now that I'm doing the fine tuning I can't seem to adjust the choke assembly to work properly. I have check out several websites and according to the pictures I have everything in the proper place. The bracket is attached to the carb. I have tried adjusting the level on the shaft up and down. Adjusting the innercable but can not get it to work. Sometimes I can get the choke knob to pull out but not move the jets or the knob will not pull out at all with the adjustments I have tried. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Tony

If the linkage is assembled correctly (pics?) then the problem is the cable. Bad routing or bad cable, lack of lube etc. There are about the maximum degrees of bend when the cable is installed correctly; if it is routed wrongly, it just gives too much friction. Especially a sharp bend right off the back of the dash. Too much in-cable friction has the same effect. Broken wires inside the cable housing will get you. Operate the linkage by hand - if it works then it's a cable fault.

Remember the inner attaches to the fixed placket, and the outer sits in the choke lever. That means that as the choke is pulled the whole cable wants to go up and down, so it must be free of obstructions around it. Also the lever must be attached to the shaft in such a way that when the choke is half pulled the lever should be at right-angles to the cable. If the lever is either side of that it either makes it very difficult to start opening the choke, or you can't pull it very far. http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/choke.htm#11 might help.
