MG MGB Technical - Semi floating Differential Backlash
Hi Members, can anyone please tell me how much back lash there should be between crown wheel and pinion on my 1973 MGB as the Haynes manual dose not specifye. Regards Patrick Tighe

Unlike most diffs, that I've set up, the B's Salisbury requires you to set the backlash to the numbers that are etched on the rear face of the crownwheel. RAY

Ray, Thankyou for your prompt reply I have been onto MG technical and they feel that my problem is not with the crown wheel and pinon but with the thrust washers, (the thrust washers being worn) that space the planetry gears in the diff carrier, he says it can be repair with the axle insitu, Regards patrick

Replacing thrust washers (2 fibre and 2 bronze) is fairly simple, but also replace the planet gear pinion and the roll pin and this should take a lot of back lash out of the dif.
