MG MGB Technical - 'Scatter cam'
Hi everyone, I am having my 18V engine rebuilt by a reputable shop that specializes in LBC's. Nothing special, overbored to 30 thou, head and deck shaved and the usual 3 angle valve job. They are planning to use a Kent "scatter cam" (expensive). Anybody have any experience with these cams and is there any advantage or disadvantage to using them. I get the feeling that it really is not necessary. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers Neil.

Scatter pattern cams are usually only used in very high rev racing situations. It is designed to help overcome the siamese port design. I would never use one on the street. Denis

Hi Neil We tend to find scatter pattern cams come on song alittle earlier then fade out alittle earlier...you get nothing for nothing! Which profile are you thinking of as some work better than others. We tend to find the early Piper HR270 and HR285 cams suit the MGB engine characteristics admirably. Scatter cams are an expensive item and maybe unnecessary? we don't use them at all. Peter

Seems quite out of place on an otherwise stock engine. I run the Kent 270 and am happy with the results. RAY

Hi- Check out David Anton's new "V" cams...# V-11,12.13, all similar to the proven HR Pipers, with tweaks he's done having shown extra-good results. Over Camming as Peter notes is lose-lose and expensive.VEM
