MG MGB Technical - reoval of 1 1/8'nut on flange, rear end

i am having one big problem removing the nut holding the univ. joint flange on the front of the rear end, i have tried 3foot pipe ona socket wrench and heat still solid anyone have any ideas , thanks les

The best thing would be to use an impact wrench, but I assume you don't have access to a compressor or you would already have tried it. Heat and repeated tapping with a hammer will eventually get it off. RAY

I feel your pain.

How are you keeping the flange from twisting? I fabricated a
27" bar of thick, cold-rolled steel where one end bolts to the
flange and the other end rests on the ground.

Then I used a big breaker bar socket wrench with a 4' pipe.

While trying to twist the nut off I was literally standing on the
pipe. I could feel the car lifting up off of the jack stands on
one side! Then...POW! I thought I had snapped the pinion,
but the nut did come free and all was good after that.

I had similar problem.
I made up a steel bar with suitable hole spacing to brace the flange from turning. This was 'stopped' by one of the leaf springs.
I put a long tommy bar and socket on the nut, and pushed up on the end of the bar with a floor jack until a lot of the weight of the rear end was on the jack. I bounced the rear end at the bumper a few times and 'bang'. I thought the bar or the socket had broken, but the nut had finally come loose.
It certainly needs the'impact'.
Sounds brutal, but.....
