MG MGB Technical - Rear wheel bearing removal
| Hello, I reached and removed the oil seal plus all the rear brake assembly (drum, back-plate, shoes), all is left is the bearing and the axle. How do I remove the bearing? Any special tool? Thanks for your help. Valter. |

| Try looking at this Youtube video. A guy replacing the thrust washers in his differential. About 6 minutes through he is shown removing the bearing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cFanj0iSMA When I did mine I made a not so elaborate jig which had a 'platform' with a hole in it for the half shaft. I used the hub nut to extract the halfshaft (and with it the bearing)not the threaded rod. I think I made two pieces of threaded rod each with a nut at the bottom and top so I could adjust the length and a piece of plate at the top with said hole in it. I think I used M10 threaded rod but one which fits the holes in the bearing housing. It must have been simple as I don't do complicated! |

| Every time I've removed a halfshaft from the casing all it's needed is a gentle tug! However you will need access to a hydraulic press to remove and replace the bearing on the halfshaft. |

| Thanks guys! I'll fabricate a tool to do that One more: after removing the bearing together with the half shaft, is it easy to install/insert the half shaft back on? Valter |

| I just refitted the hub loosely and tapped around the back of it with a wooden mallet. Once you have the splines located then just tap the end of the half-shaft to seat the bearing in the casing. Purists may say to use a cylindrical drift the same size as the bearing outer, but mine have been OK. Make sure that the bearing spacer is fitted between the bearing and the shoulder on the half-shaft, and the right way round. There is a radius in the angle of the shoulder, and the spacer has one flat side and one radiused side, the radiused side goes to the shoulder and the flat to the bearing. If you don't get this right the half-shaft and hub will not be in the correct position, and the hub may rub. |
