MG MGB Technical - rear axle bearing oil seal

I've just done the shims in my tube axle differential and am about to reassemble everything. I have put new oil seals in the 'endplates' (not sure what they're called). I notice that the joint between the end of the axle and the 'endplate' does not have a gasket. Surely this is exposed to the axle oil and therefore in danger of leaking? MGOC say a gasket is not needed. Is the metal to metal interface that good that it doesn't need a gasket?

Yes. I use a light smear of Hylomar jointing compound.never any problems..
