MG MGB Technical - Pulling the halfshafts

The roadster is laid up for the winter and one of the jobs I wanted to do is to have another go at getting rid of the clunk in the back axle. I fitted part of the anti clunk kit 3 years ago (the bronze washers) but as the halfshafts had to be pulled to fit the others I did not do them, so it did not completely get rid of the clunk.
I have seen on a previous thread that there is a way of drawing out the halfshafts using spacers and the brake plate but cannot find the thread in the archives. Hopful that someone can tell me how this is done. I also want to sort out the problem of oil getting in to the rear brakes, I assume it needs new oilseals fitted.

You have to take the back-plate off, or at least lift it out of the way if the hydraulic pipe can be bent without fracturing. Personally I have just loosely refitted the hub to the half-shaft then used a mallet on the back of the hub and that removed the bearing cap which holds the oil-seal, as well as the half-shaft and bearing from the axle casing.

You can probably 'screw' the half-shaft out with bolts through the axle casing holes and nuts on the outer face, but that means you have to dislodge at least the bearing cap first. Alternatively with the bearing cap rotated 45 degrees and the hub loose and the nut on just a couple of threads you could put spacers between the back of the hub and the face of the axle casing and screw the hub nut back on. Or a slide-hammer on the hub, or a sledge-hammer through a chain round the back of the hub, and so-on.
