MG MGB Technical - Pinion Pin indents direction?
| 79 MGB I'm performing a differential thrust washer "clunk" repair. So far, so good...except: I was not aware of the indents on the Pinion Pin, and didn't notice their direction when I removed it, I was more concerned about catching the pinion gear. Now I'm ready to reinstall, and since there is a 50/50 chance I will be 180* out...and with my luck I will be...which way do the indents face? Item #69 below. BTW, one of the thrust washers was missing, which may account for that continuous clunk/clank I've been getting above 30 mph...I wonder how long the PO lived with that...

Factory manual does not specify but all the ones I have rebuilt have had the indents facing the crown wheel. Jim

In the last few days there was a thread on this site with a link to an excellent video on how to do this job. It referred to the cutouts and if I remember correctly they went to the left. I just looked around on MGB general and technical for the thread but could not see it. Perhaps a search on MGB differential in the archives or on Youtube?

That link was from one of my other questions this week. I've discovered YouTube is a great resourse for a lot of "how to ....." most anything. The differential went together like a snap...easy as pie...I could feel the loss of movement with both thrust washers in place. Brakes, etc. back together tomorrow. Then hopefully a little road test this weekend.

Joe- To the left as you already know. I did a recent clunkectomy and used 2 side thrust washers ringside and the used cap piece in addition to the new upper copper thrust. Very much improved with Redline too. Vem
