MG MGB Technical - performance

I would like to improve the performance of my '71 Roadster.
Could anyone suggest what Camshaft I should go for?
Would a hotter cam increase or decrease the dreaded tappet rattle?
Any advice appreciated.

If you are thinking of a mild road cam, you also need to be thinking of a flowed head and inlet manifold, 3 angle valves, new followers, rocker shaft and rockers. New, preferably duplex, timing chain and sprockets, a decent, large bore exhaust, otherwise I doubt whether you will notice any difference. The biggest gains are from the head and valves, but the head needs to breath, hence the exhaust If the valve train is rattling, more than normal that is, it's worn, replacing only part of it is false economy. And all this that's assuming the bottom end is up to it. If reboring then go for +0.060", balancing will also help. If you're going to do it, do it proper, get Peter Burgess' "How to Power Tune MGB 4 Cylinder Engines, it's a cracking read!!

I could not agree more. Follow Allans advice. I have a rattling tappet assembly it is next on the agenda, but until one has all the other parts, really there is no point in the excercise. You could follow this route; Make sure all is well with the engine, then intake system (carbs well set up, freeflow filters, jet up.) Then, exhaust, silencers etc Peco red system. Then head to complement all. It is also a cost step up. Mike
