MG MGB Technical - oil pan cork gaskets

can anyone tell me what the correct wigth the cork gaskets are? also can they be installed without having to loosen or remove the back plate and the front plate. the cork gaskets i got seem too wide to install.72 mgb-gt 18v engine. i have the engine on engine stand so it is easy to get to. had the gaskets installed by machine shop but after installing defective oil pump and having to remove oil pan again to install proper pump is the reason to install new gaskets.thanks

Don't bother with getting another cork gasket. Fel-Pro has a modern technology one that won't become sodden and leak like a cork gasket does. Constructed of high temperature resistant, edge-molded silicone rubber on a rigid carrier, it provides a superior fit, as well as both high heat and vacuum resistance, while the included Oil Pan SnapUps speed installation. It's called the PermaDryPlus® Oil Pan Gasket (Fel-Pro Part # OS20011).

Fel-Pro stuff is widely available through the big chain auto parts stores.

Fel-Pro dry fit, (no glue), pan gaskets are the best! The ones I've bought were blue in color and don't look natural for an old engine, but their wonderful to work with and seal perfectly. Just make sure the pan and block surfaces are clean and dry. PJ
