MG MGB Technical - minimum req. for unleaded rebuild?
Looking to pull and rebuild suspect 5 bearing motor. Want to run on unleaded and am looking for advice as to the best options? I am looking to run the car as a sometimes daily user ( when dry!) and the run is approx 150k each way on the F3 in Oz. So, am looking for reliability and economy etc and an engine that copes with both a longish run and the inevitable stop-start of city traffic Tried entering a basic search of the archive, not really set up to do definitive data searches, hence my request , because I know there must be pages of data re this subject.

I see you are in Oz, but the very best advice and components are from Peter Burgess here in Derbyshire. http://www.mgcars.org.uk/peterburgess/ His unleaded heads are all you need. Ring or email him for expert advice and no rubbish. He won't try to sell you things you don't need. Top bloke.

As ever I recommend Peter Burgess' econotune head for this sort of use. It will give you unleaded capabilty better power and lower fuel consumption. You may have an equivalent state of tune on the market there. The improved power will also be at the rev range you use on the road. A mild cam may be in order as well. Again I would take PBs advice on this.

Mark, There is plenty of debate as to whether valve seat recession is a major problem for normal road use, however as you are rebuilding the engine anyway it makes sense to convert to unleaded. Any good engine shop can fit hardened valve seats, and in my case the engineer recommended 3-angle VN Commodore valves with Hastings oil seals. I have these on the 18V engines in both my MGB and Magnette. I also cleaned up the ports, matched combustion chamber volumes, balanced, and fitted a mild cam upgrade. Both cars are fine on either long runs or stop-start traffic. (The MGB was able to take 45 minutes at crawling pace in 43 degree temperatures a couple of years ago.) Regards, David
