MG MGB Technical - MGB rev counter

Hello,

Where does the RPM reading come from on a 1971 mgb? There appears to be a drive cable for the early models but not for my model year. Is it an electrical connection? If so where does it connect to?

Many thanks,
Alex Davies

It is electric/electronic.

A '71 should have the RVI tacho. The ignition feed to the coil goes via the tacho and the tacho detects the pulses created by the contact breaker points switching.

Alex, to add a little to Dave's response.
A white wire from the ignition switch goes to the rev counter and then on to the +ve side of the ignition coil. Depending on which rev counter is fitted, the wire could form a loop on the pickup on the back of the rev counter or it will have two bullet connectors (one in, one out!).
