MG MGB Technical - Loose float bowl bolts
Looks like I will have to remove the carbs to tighten the bolts. Once the carbs are removed, what else will I have to do to get at the bolts and tighten them snuggly? I already have the new rubber spacers, anything else I need? Thanks, Mike 69BGT

Not necessary to remove carbs. Bolts can be tightened in-situ with the right wrench, but you have to make it. It's 1/4BS, so a slim head 7/16 with a few thou out of the jaws and the head ground to half thickness and bulk will do. Since you probably only need to do this once, all you really need to do is remove the Pozidrive screw that holds the choke link to the jet - DO NOT lose the brass distance spacer. Swing the link out of the way and tighten the bolt. Usually the bushes are OK once the bolt is tight, but you can replace them if needed. Be sure the bowl side bush is the correct one, since it sets the float bowl angle. The bushes are handed and made with different angles for various installations - errors in stock/packing are common. The OE ones were colour coded, but I've seen replacements that do not conform. FRM

HS float bowls are supposed to be soft-mounted to the carb body, i.e. some flex.

Thanks FRM and Paul. My bowls have been getting progressively looser over time and need a good tightening. They easily tilt back and forth at this point.

Sounds more the rubber grommets may have perished rather than the actual bolts loose, if both have been changing at about the same rate. They should move quite a bit if pushed, obviously against rubber.
