MG MGB Technical - Hard Top Identification
| I have recently acquired a hard top that fits my 67 Roadster beautifully. I will need to do some restoration as it has no hood clips or metal hardware at all and requires new rubber for the rear window and where it meets the body. I would also be interested in getting it lined at some stage also. I am very interested if anyone out there knows who it may have been made by as there are no identifying markings etc. Hopefully I will be able to do this before winter in 4-5 months. It would be great to hear from anyone else out there who may have also restored a hard top and can explain about window rubbers etc. Please see attached image. Thanks in advance.

That top looks like a J&S hardtop. Very common throughout Australia. I'd expect that there'd be a few tops like yours in and around Canberra. You might want to check there through the local MG Car Club. I'm away from home this week, only a phone and no computer with me. However both the NSW and the Victorian MG car clubs have carried an article in the last few months on Australian hardtops in their respective monthly magazines. There's a version of this article too on "The MG Experience" web site in their 'Library' section. You should find images there of tops similar to yours. Feel free to email me next week when I'm home again if you think I can help. Tom Aczel

CB I agree with Tom that it is one of J&S's versions. A competent motor trimmer will line it for you - I didn't use the spring wire supports across the inside top but instead glued the lining direct to the roof over a thin foam veneer. Peter

Tom and Peter, Thanks very much for the responses. Tom, I will certainly shoot you an e-mail next week on your return. Peter, would you have any pics that you may be able to share of fittings and the lining work? If you would be happy to do so it would be greatly appreciated. amy-chris@aapt.net.au Many thanks,

Chris if you have a look at the article in the library section of " The MG Experience" on Australian hardtops you'll see a photo of a (my) J&S interior lining. (They were rather elaborately fitted out compared to other tops made for the MGB) The fitting arrangements involve standard MGB windscreen clamps at the front and J- shaped hooks that clamp under the tonneau panel in the rear quarters. The rear mounting arrangement on these tops is a poor design as the top inevitably moves around on it's rubber at the rear and will ultimately wear through the paint where it sits. I've after much thought on this problem managed to overcome the paint wear problem. You'll find photos of my set-up in the "Tech Tips" section of the Sydney MG Car Club web site, though when I last looked at this, important bits were left out from what I'd actually supplied for inclusion. I've got quite a few photos I can send you when I get back home. I had similar problems to you when I bought my top, with the mounts missing but working out the original mounting arrangement was not difficult; improving it was more involved however. I at least though got the wire interior roof lining supports with my top which made properly trimming it inside much easier. Rubbers and "glass" ( I used Lexan) are easily found.
