MG MGB Technical - Gearbox input bearing shims.
| Hi Guys, I have just removed the front cover off my OD gearbox and found bits and pieces of what I presume is left of the shim/s that are supposed to be there. How does this happen? Is the input bearing turning within the housing? Also there seems to be bits missing. They can only go one way so presumably they have ended up in the gearbox! I do not want to just replace the shims without knowing how this happens and what is the solution. Your input would be appreciated. Cheers, Neil. |

| Yes, it is not unusual to find the shims missing entirely - they will get deformed if the bearing outer race turns in the housing and then get chewed up in the bearing, passing through into the gearbox where they get carried into the gears and chewed up even more until all that is left is a fine metallic sheen to the oil! Moss supply the shims. First ensure the front cover is flat using fine abrasive paper lubricated with paraffin on a flat surface. Then follow the manual instructions for working out the thickness of shims required. Finally fit the bearing with a drop of Loctite 271 or 641. |
