| lf - I assume that you are having trouble getting the nut loose. If this is the case, drill a piece of heavy strap iron to fit two of the holes in the pinion flange and bolt it in place, then rest the other end on the floor. Next use a breaker bar with a long extension on it to bounce up and down on or use an pneumatic wrench on the nut. With the impact wrench, be prepared to hold the trigger down for several (up to 10 or more) minutes until the nut finally loosens up (regardless of how long it takes, it will seem like and eternity). | I think he got the nut loose last week, after just such problems. Whether he said the axle type with that I can't remember and I can't be bothered to go and look. For the tube type the WSM says the pinion must be pressed out not driven to avoid damaging the bearings. If replacing the bearings presumably it doesn't matter, but then there are several extra steps in reassembly to get the correct clearances. It lists seven special tools and adaptors to deal with the bearings. The banjo looks a little easier, but not much. To be honest unless something is actually broken these will whine for ever, personally I wouldn't go further than possibly oil seal replacement as far as the pinion goes. Anything else I'd swap it for a rebuilt unit from a reputable source that has all the knowledge, tools and parts, diffs have to be setup just right. |
