MG MGB Technical - fit early OD gearbox into later 5 bearing

Am looking to fit an early ( 1964) OD gearbox into a later 5 Bearing engine.
Peter Gamble alerted me about potential spigot size and back plate differences.
Has anyone travelled this path and has input re solutions etc?

Most go the other way and put the later 4 sync od into the earlier engine. I know it doesnt help. The later flywheel is bigger than the early flywheel so it might not fit in the bell housing. Measuire or substitute the early flywheel and should be ok. moss Europe also sell conversion spigots for the 3 synchro box to the later engine.

Mark,
I fitted a 5-bearing engine into my Magnette, which is the same combination as yours, but approached from the other direction i.e. new engine, existing gearbox.

The information you already have is correct - backplate and flywheel and change the spigot bush. I think I obtained the bush from Heritage in Sydney; it was a stock item.

You will have to think about the starter - I used the Bendix type from the Magnette, so there were no problems mounting to the back plate.

Are you really sure you want a non-synchro first gear though?

Hi David

I have the gearbox and have had a crash box in the past. My only fear is that this is going to be a car for Madame and am rightly concerned ...... time will tell.
I guess I could always go back to Peter Gamble at Hi-Gear as I have for my MGA.
