MG MGB Technical - exhaust manifold id
I recently purchased 2 exhaust manifolds from early mgs for su conversions of RB cars. They are both numbered 12h 709. However there is another number (casting number?) that is different. One is AGA E1 and the other is MOWOG. Does anyone know what these numbers mean? Thanks for any help in identifying these. Karl

Karl- The Original Equipment SU exhaust manifold used with the 1˝” SU HS4 Series carburetors’ SU intake manifolds have a mounting flange thickness of 9/16” (14.2875mm) and can be readily identified by its external casting number of 12H 709. On the other hand, the Original Equipment SU exhaust manifold used with the 1˝” SU HIF4 Series carburetors’ SU intake manifold has a mounting flange thickness of 7/16” (11.1125mm) and can be readily identified by its external casting number of 12H 3911. MOWOG stands for MOrris WOlseley, and mG, the three brands that made uo the original Nuffield group from which MG developed. AGA E1 I believe is a production series code. Can anybody out there confirm this?

'Tother way round with MOWOG in that MG existed as a separate company owned privately by Lord Nuffield for some time (as did Wolseley) before he sold them to 'his' publicly owned company. At that time there was much internal politicking and Abingdon lost all its autonomy and design staff (bar perhaps about one chap) and all decisions were made at Cowley for some time. This led to common mechanicals across the three groups, hence the MOWOG (are all letters in capitals? Or is it MoWoG?) as described being cast into many components. It's also why 'G' is the first character of MG chassis numbers from that time, and not 'M' which had been bagged by Morris.

Thanks steve and Paul. There is some small differences in them although they are the same flange thickness. Karl
