MG MGB Technical - Delco/GM Alternator Conversion

Does anyone have a precise wiring diagram for the conversion from a generator to a Delco/GM alternator? I have a TD with a 1964 3-main MGB engine I would prefer to keep my voltage regulator and ammeter if possible. If you do reply, please advise the model number of the alternator and/or the GM car that it fits.

Barny Gaylord has an excellent article on the conversion to a Lucas alternator but I think that I would prefer the Delco because of its higher output, reliability and lower cost.

Thank you,

If the Delco/GM alternator you speak of is the one out of a 1990s Saturn, it already has the voltage regulator as part of the unit itself internally. Regardless the alternator you choose, however, know that most made since the early 70s have internal voltage regulators.

In that case, you could surely keep the old voltage regulator for visual effect but simply not hooked up any longer. Bypassing the wiring would not be that hard, and if done well, most folks would never know the difference. Just a thought.

See if this helps http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/electricstext1.htm#convert

You can keep the control box if you wish, used solely as a connector block. However if you want to use the greater output of the alternator for additional electrics then you really need to uprate the output wire from the alternator at the very least. If you haven't already done it you will need to convert it to negative earth either before-hand or at the same time.
