MG MGB Technical - Clutch release bearing.

Hi all,

I have just replaced the release bearing on the clutch. (71 BGT}.

My concern is that it appears to be rather stiff and swivels with difficulty. This only occurred when the locking tabs are in place.

Is this normal?

Cheers, Neil.

Did you lubricate it? I used the red grease that came with the new clutch on those as well as the splined parts. The purpose of the locking tabs *is* to press the pins on the bearing into the cups of the release arm, so there will be some friction. Whilst compared to the normal clutch forces involved it's not likely to affect clutch operation, but it could cause the bearing to wear unevenly, which would cause premature failure.

I lubricated the pins as well with the red grease - after I had gone back to the shop to get the right sized lock-tabs! The ones that came in the box were too small in diameter and did not fit!
There is resistance in the swivel movement but with a smooth action. The old release bearing only had a lock-tab on one side and was 'wobbly'...

It really depends on how stiff it is. If you can push it with a finger-tip then it's probably OK. If you have to grasp it with both hands then probably not.

I have had to lightly file the inside face of the clutch fork when fitting a new bearing.
Experience tells me when it feels 'nice'!!
