MG MGB Technical - Clutch Fluid for a1972 MGB

Folks,

Just trying to find out another fact for our rebuild.

What should we be using for the clutch fluid? The manual calls for the use of Lockheed disc brake fluid series II. Is this the equal of a DOT2 brake fluid?

Thanks,
Bruce and Shaun

Bruce - There is no DOT 2 brake fluid. The choice is DOT 3 or DOT 4. DOT 4 is preferable as it is Low Moisture Absorption and will last a bit longer. Cheers - Dave

Bruce-
I have to agree with Dave. Dot 4 brake fluid will do fine. Stay away from Dot 3 Brake fluid as it's obsolete.

Dave and Stephen,
Thank you for the responses.
We will be using the DOT 4 for the clutch and the brakes.
Time to check the slave cylinder and get moving.

Don't know about in the USA but in the UK there is DOT3 (although this is obsolete), DOT4, DOT5 and DOT5.1 also know as 'Super DOT4'. DOT 3 and 4 are glycol based and compatible with each other but attack paintwork. DOT5 is silicone based and not compatible with the first two. And this is where words almost fail me, because DOT5.1 is actually glycol based and not compatible with DOT5! Wouldn't you think it would have been called DOT4.1 or DOT6? That's why some manufacturers package it as 'Super DOT4' to avoid confusion. It is compatible with DOT3 and DOT4 but has at least the same temperature rating as DOT5, and was developed as DOT5 isn't compatible with ABS systems. As such some places don't even stock DOT5 any more, just DOT4 and Super DOT4. There is also Castrol LMA which for a long time has had the performance of DOT5 but is compatible with DOT3 and DOT4, but not DOT5, i.e. much the same as Super DOT4.

Clear?
