MG MGB Technical - camshaft end play
Currently building a B engine. We have .013 camshaft end play. Manual calls for .003 to.007. How big a deal is this much difference? The thrust plate does not seem to be worn at all. How thick should the plate be? The plate we have is .137 inch thick. Thanks! --Jack

Jack- Since the distributor is driven by the camshaft, the more endplay the camshaft has, the greater the timing variation. However, some endplay is necessary in order to prevent the domed ends of the tappets from constantly riding over the same path on the camshaft so that wear of that interface will be minimized. The factory's camshaft endplay specification of from .003" to .007" is reasonable.

Hi Jack We try to keep the endfloat to .001 to .0015 thou. Surface grind or use a lathe to reduce the flange at the back of the gear. Are you fitting a vernier pulley by any chance? Peter

Thanks for the replys, gentlemen. Peter--yes, have fitted a vernier pulley. We ended up taking .010 off of the back of the vernier pulley gear flange, which brought end play down to .003. Got lots of room for wear, now. Thanks again! --Jack
