MG MGB Technical - Brake Hoses
Came to replace a front flexible hose on the 71 BGT, and having cut through the old one to get a ring spanner on its hex ends, discovered that the new one, supplied by a well-known firm in the south of England, had its inner end thread so badly cut that it was unusable. The replacement is correctly threaded, but I notice that the angle of the taper, which mates with the double flare of the metal brake pipe, is 30-odd degrees, not 45 degrees which I thought was SAE standard. I'm replacing the metal pipe, but this seems to be a big discrepancy to force my new double flare to seal to. Am I worrying too much? Is this a common problem with new, repro flexible hoses? Is NOS the only way to get parts of decent quality? Kevin

I've never had a problem with replacement hoses, I would return it to the supplier if you're not happy with the quality. With brake hoses I would always err on the side of caution. Whilst NOS parts are almost always better quality than new reproduction parts, you need to consider that rubber will degrade over time even if it's not been used. At least with a faulty seal you'll see the problem in the workshop, with a hose you might not notice the problem until it's too late.

Never bothered looking at the flare, just trusted what I was sold from a reputable supplier, and not had a problem. According to the Workshop Manual Metric and Imperial have different flares, and should not be mixed.
