MG MGB Technical - blue smoke on acceleration
A buddy told me recently I was blowing blue smoke at gear changes during acceleration (18V engine). Would that be rings or worn valve guides? thanks, Tyler

Most likely valve guides or seals. There are other possible causes and if you give more info about the engine eg miles covered, emissions system fitted others may have other suggestions.

Blue/oil smoke under hard acceleration is piston/rings, on up changes, when you momentarily close the throttle, valve stems/seals. But then again all that USA anti smog stuff might throw up a different answer.

Stems/guides/seals also results in blue smoke when blipping the throttle after idling a while, or when opening the throttle again after a long downhill on a closed throttle, as well as when opening the throttle immediately after a gearchange. Blue smoke *during* acceleration is more likely rings/bores.

... but the breather system can make the situation worse. It's worth runnin a check that the system is clear - at least on UK cars.
