MG MGB Technical - Best way to protect bare metal
Having just acquired a solid ex US 1963 B shell as the basis of my restoration, I'm in the process of cleaning up the body tub and rubbing back to bare metal. The car is an FIA project and I want to finish up with a shell that is body colour inside and out. I also want provide the best level of rust protection and wondered what is the best way to protect bare metal surfaces as a base layer? As I clean up the chassis rails, under arch areas and underside of boot, should I put a base layer of red oxide primer on or is there a better solution?

Use 2 part epoxy "direct to metal" PPG Omni Au or equivalent. It is fairly moisture roof and very durable.

I used some stuff called Kephos which I just wiped over bare steel panels with a cloth. That kept the bare steel of my car protected for years (literally) as I worked on the body. The whole car was sanded back to bare steel again just before etch priming it. http://www.buildsrilanka.com/ICI%20Paints/Duco%20Kephos%20-%20S841-253.htm Simon

If you want it to last without the continual problem of rust coming through the paint work, (cheapest)have it sand blasted with Garnet and then etch primed within 1 hour with a good weldable etch primer. (dearest)have it acid dipped and electrophoretically primed. Always waxoil everywhere went bolting up components. I used the sand and etch primer method as the other method did not exist 14 years ago when I built our B roadster. After 60,000 miles we have no rust anywhere , even on the underside where paint has been blasted off by my enthusiastic driving, the etch primer is still holding on. Graham
