MG MGB Technical - Alternator wiring question
I ended up installing a new alternator(stock Lucas) this weekend and it appears to have corrected the problem. Car fired up fine with a full charged battery and while running the voltage was running at a steady 14vT The install went ok except for difficulty in removing the old pulley and installing it on the new one. We also broke the spade connector off the fatter red cable. We had the schematics with us and diagram shows what looks like two brown wires and one yellow/brown. Ours was brown, red, brown and yellow Wiring is not my strong point, but can someone explain the fucntion of the three wires attaching to the alternator perform?.. At some stage I will need to replace all three connectors, as they were quite dirty

A novel variation, which doesn't match up with any of the schematics I have. Red is the mystery wire, it depends what it is connected to at either end. Are you sure it isn't a PO addition? Or replacement for an original brown? What's it connected to now?

Paul I have absolutely no idea if it's a PO addition. All I know is that it is thicker than the other two wired, red and connects to the centre "pin" of the three adapters on the alternator. From there it goes into a wrapped up bundle... down to the starter I would assume.

Sounds like it could be a replacement for the original thick brown then, which can burn out if the alternator diodes short out. Should be easy enough to check if it arrives at the solenoid.
