MG MGB Technical - Alloy bonnet
Does anyone know what cars were fitted with alloy bonnets? Apart from applying a magnet to the surface, how can one tell/ Is there a weight saving worth while? Mike

AFAIK they were fitted up until around 1971/2. It is very obvious when you lift an alloy bonnet, as it is very light.

I will have to check mine. It is the right age but AFAIK ? It was very easy to drill when I was placing some leather bonnet straps on for the hill climb requirements. It is my first MG so have nothing else to compare it to. Certainly my old TR 6 bonnet was much heavier, but it was larger. Mike

My '71 had an alloy bonnet. They really are a big weight saving. Just try and stick a fridge magnet on it. If its alloy the magnet will just fall off.

The alloy bonnet weighs 17 lbs. less than its steel counterpart. New ones are pricey, so original ones are highly valued. RAY
