MG MGB Technical - 3 synchro to 4 synchro conversion
| I am considering taking the 18V engine with 4 synchro gearbox as a complete unit from my '73 Roadster and putting it in our '67 3 synchro GT rally car. I need to do it as quickly as possible as we have a continental event coming up and I would like to shake it down in advance. Does anyone have any know of any particular problems and 'magic' solutions, such as the narrow tunnel? |

| The 2 clearance issues that I encountered when I did this with my '67 were a tight fit between the od unit and the floor. A bit of work with a BFH cured that problem. the other modification is that the shift lever sits about 2" farther back, so you'll have to modify the adapter plate on the top of the tunnel. A half hour affair. You can use the starter from the '73 and still retain the fender mounted solenoid. Merely jump the large and small wires, on the starter solenoid, together so that when you turn the key to start power flows to the starter mounted solenoid main feed and actuating spade at the same time. | Graham I did this many years ago and there is a lot of information in the archives. I also wrote an article on 'how' which I think I still have which may assist. Firstly I did not encounter any clearance problems in the actual transmission tunnel. However a slight dent where the speedo cable exits the gearbox makes connecting and reconnecting easier. The main clearance issue is in the area of the bell housing particularly the starter motor bulge. I filed off some aluminium in this area to get sufficient clearance and once installed it is not noticeable. You will need to use the pre engaged starter motor. There are many other little things which you will find in the archives and if you email me I will send you the article. Ollie Stephenson was also a big contributor to previous threads on this subject. cheers |
