MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - will a rubber pinion fit into a chrome rack housin

Guys, I am doing an Aussie V6 conversion that may require modifying the pinion shaft and have a spare rubber pinion gear/shaft already. Can I fit this sraight into my chrome rack or not?

One from a '75 or'76 should since the ratio is the same.
David

It didnt in may case - 72 car and 78 pinion.
Liam H

David is correct. Liam, the '78 pinion is a different ratio than up to '76 and that is why it would not fit.

The original chrome bumper rack ended use with the 1974 cars, but the steering ratio was continued unchanged in the rubber bumper rack from 1974 1/2 through 1976. In 1977, the ratio changed to a slower number through 1980 to assist the heavier cars at low speeds.
