MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Starter wont fit.....
I'm almost done swapping my 215 for a 4.6 Rover. I had a gear reduction starter from D & D on the 215, the maker is local to me and exchanged the nose for a Rover one. However, this set-up hits the cross bolt on the block. I've been told that this is the only Rover nose that D & D has made. Do I need to shave this bolt head down for clearence or is there another answer? My Rover mechanic thought a stock starter may work but hits the frame on 79 B...

"My Rover mechanic thought a stock starter may work but hits the frame on 79 B..." The GTV8 starter should not hit the frame - (but is a b*gger to install). The 137 BHP engines had a problem free life without cross bolts - so far as I know it was a similar story for 150BHP engines - however the 190+ were mostly cross-bolted. I would shave one off very sparingly. There are one or two other protrusions on the later block which you may not need - it can help to get rid of them from the outset.

Morgan, I ran into the same problem. If you look at the front of the block you will see that one of the cross bolts is counter sunk and is allen head type. You need to do this on the rear cross bolt as well to clear the starter. I did not feel comfortable doing this so I sent the engine off to a machine shop. The bolt can be purchased from your local Land rover dealer as can the seal that goes on the bolt. Regards, Mike

Morgan, The gear reduction starter for the 215 requires an adapter ring to re-use it on a 3.9. May be needed for the 4.6, as well (once you resolve the cross bolt issue). That 215 didn't stay in there very long! :)
