MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Starter motor trouble

Just wondering if anyone has had the same problem with their starter motor.
GT V8 with 4.6 engine and 10.8:1 compression ratio.
Occasionally when I start the engine( which starts fine) after releasing the key the starter dis engages ok but the starter motor is still running ( starter sounds like its spinning without turning the engine over). When the ignition is turned off the starter still runs without engageing the engine. Only way to stop it is disconnect the battery. Often a sharp tap with a hammer on starter body will cure it.
Just thought id get some views before i start ripping it all apart.

Check the connections at the solenoid. If they are the uninsulated blade type, it's possible to make them touch & provide 12+ve from the brown wire to the red/white wire. Otherwise check out the start relay & ignition switch. I've just remembered, the diode in the brake fail cct. causes this problem. It's located behind the central area dash. Barrie E
