MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Shimming the steering rack
In relation to my other thread about the earth straps. I will need to lower the sterring pinion angle a touch to help with lower UJ/engine mount clearance. I have read in the archives that people use a washer or two under the lower mounting points. Is this a safe way to do it? or should I be thinking in terms of grinding the rack feet - which is going to be a bit hit and miss and I would rather avoid it. Cheers, Liam

Washers = good factor used little pieces of metal with holes stamped in them and a 90 degree bend that were riveted to the rack mounting stanchions

The washers are Glenn Towery & Jim Stuart tested & approved. And now endorsed by Greg Fast. Good enough for me!

In the mods I have done to lower a rubber bumper car with an early cross member, cutting the mounting feet at an angle was the first step, then shimming was required, using washers and thinner slips of metal. This assumes using a rubber bumper rack & shortening the steering shaft, and using the late model U-joint.
