MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Remote oil pump dumping oil
I have a remote oil pump head on my 4.2L V8. There are two hose connections on that head. One closer to the radiator, one closer to the firewall. I have the one closer to the radiator flowing into my remote oil filter, and the one closer to the firewall is receiving oil from the oil filter (mounted in the wheel well). 3 times in a row, I put on the filter (napa gold) fill the system with oil, and it starts up and has between 40-50 lbs of pressure. After a minute or two the oil pressure starts to drop and when I go to the front of the car there is oil spraying everywhere from the filter. The rubber seal at the top of the filter is working itself loose and spinning off the filter. Any suggestions? Justin

I figured with nothing to lose, I would pull the oil pump and check things out. The relief valve was absolutely stuck in its cylinder. I had to use an air hose and blow air down through the pump to get the piston out. I cleaned off the piston with my wire wheel, and then used steel wool in the bore and cleaned it out, now the piston seems to move freely in and out of the bore when I tap on it. Would this be enough to cause the problem of oil filters getting blown off the base?

I just switched to a NAPA Gold filter as well. I'm also running the remote oil filter and I've had no problems thus far with mine spraying oil or coming loose Justin.

I put everything back together and have not blown another oil filter. The pressure, however is still really high at times (revving a cold engine)and pushes up near 80 psi. I didn't shorten the spring while I was in there, and now I wish I had. I can't remove the spring with the oil pump on the motor because my block has the castings for the cross bolts, even though they haven't been drilled. The casting prevents me from turning the bolt on the oil pump. If it blows another filter I'll yank it again. If not, I'm leaving good enough alone.

Justin, I have started a new thread on my EFI conversion. I have read some of your posts from the archieves on your experiences and I think I have figured out the wiring. Al
