MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Question about metric/imperial bolts

Hi,

I need to pick up some taps and dies for the MGB to clean out paint, crud etc. Did the late MGB CB work on Metric or Imperial bolt sizes?

I'm probably going to have to buy a set and dont want to find none of them are the right size.

On the subject, had the rover V8 moved across the metric for the various engine bolts by 1985? I need to clean out so much old thread sealer you wouldn't believe it, plus I need to extend the thread on a few front bolts.

I don't even know anyone with a set of taps I can use to test.

Check out Les Bengtson's site. It has lots of good information.

Liam,

From memory, the car has Imperial bolts and nuts with a mixture from UNC and UNF.

My 1984 Rover v8 has Imperial fittings. I chased the exhaust threads with my grandfathers old Withworth taps.

I picked up a tap & die set a while back that has most common imperial and metric threads. Biggest is 1/2".

Haven't run into any problems using it on my stock 74 or my Rover conversion on my 77. Rarely do I need the metric bits.

Liam,

The engine is mostly UNF but may have some metric auxiliary components/threads. If you have a LT77 box it will have metric threads.
