MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - peugeot/sd1 brakes... which wheels?

I have fitted peugeot 505 vented discs and Rover SD1 4 pot calipers to my GT. I am looking around for wheels which will fit without having to use spacers for caliper clearance. I know that 15" KN Minators will fit, but for reasons of economics I would like to use 14" wheels as I have recently bought 5 new tyres for my old V8 wheels. The clearance problem with the old wheels was on the back of the wheel, not the rim. the 15" KNs have a different shape to the rear face of the wheel which gives the necessary caliper clearance. I know this brake combination has been used by a number of people on this BBS; what wheels are you all using?
Thanks!

Nick,

I used SD1 4 pots but with solid V8 discs and 6" x 15" KN Minilites with no clearance problems, on your car the extra thickness of the vented discs and the extra width of the caliper extending it outwards is obviously whats causing the problem. I think whichever wheel size you use you will still have the same problem and will have to resort to a wheel spacer, but probably only of a small thickness. You could get some washers to fit over the wheel studs to allow you to measure and ascertain how much additional clearance you require. If you retain the 14" wheels which a friend of mine did, you will not be able to use the adhesive type balancing weights on the inner rim of the wheel, the caliper will knock them off but he has had the wheels rebalanced using alternative weights and it seems to work ok.

Hope thats of assistance.

Hi Kevin
I would need 15mm spacers if I wanted to use the V8 wheels. I don't want to compromise handling or safety by using such wide spacers now that the performance of the car has increased so much. I know that some wheels do fit this brake combination without spacers; I am just looking for a 14" wheel option. Thanks for your advice though.
Regards, Nick.

I'm using 4 pot volvo calipers (wide ventilated disk type, nissan ventilated disks) and minilite replicas (Ultalites-performance wheels, the real minilites are too expensive here), which have plenty of clearance. The rostyles I had were hopeless, at least 7mm too close.
I actually think the minilite type look better than the V8 style which are very BL. Also the minlite disk cooling has got to be batter than with the V8 type. Given the rarity value of the V8 wheels you might be able to swap them for new minilites?
I actualy don't see anything wrong with spacers, so long as you keep your nuts done up tight!. The minilites have thicker centres which effectivly acta s spacers anyway. Only draw back is that it's not legal here in Australia.
