MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Otter Switch
Can anyone tell me what an otter switch does? I know its somethign to do with the cooling system - it mentioned everywhere but never actually described. On a similar note, can anyone with a low profile JWR manifold tell me whether the small aperture at the base of the carb mounting section is for the temp sensor? It seems to port directly into the fuel/air chamber - I thought it was supposed to go into the water jacket somewhere?? In any event the one from the SD1 is too long.

The temp sensor goes just to the left of the thermostat housing (viewed from front). The hole at the base of the carb mounting is for servo vacuum. If I remember rightly the otter switch is the temp switch that operates the fans on factory cars. Located on top of the factory inlet manifold. Hope this helps Mark

The Otter switch does control the electric fans, Factory V8's have one on the intake manifold, late MGB's have a different kind in the Rad.and E-type Jags also have one. http://www.coolcatcorp.com/ has a nice replacment with switches that come on at different temps. Bob

Thanks mark and Bob - found the sender hole - looking at wrong side of manifold (doh!), shame I rounded the old one from my SD1 trying to get it out thus leaving it in situ for eternity - I'm going to try an early land rover V8 unit, see if that fits.

Mark, if you are stil following this thread - got the temp sensor sorted, but where on my old SD1 carb/manifold set up where I find the servo/vacum take-off gubbins ?
