MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Oscillating temp gauge
Gents, I've seen it discussed before, and had a look through the MGCC V8 Workshop Notes but couldn't find a solution; The temp gauge on my (Rover) V8 will rise to about max, then rapidly fall off to just under 'N' then slowly climb back to max. Help appreciated. I know it's a common issue. Regards, James

James, it sounds to me like you are getting steam pockets in the heads. Is your radiator below the highest point in the cooling system? The proven solution would be a surge tank, properly designed and installed. Jim

Right, I had this problem until recently, I had air in my upper radiator hose. I fixed the problem by installing an in-line filler at the highest point in the system. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a154/filospinato/P3110617.jpg

Jim - thanks, my set up is standard factory V8 so I assume that all is at correct height. Jake - I do have a plastic plug in the top of the radiator tank, I will top up there and test, thanks.

James, This may also be a sticking themostat in the block. It sticks , the temp rises , it opens and the temp falls and so on. Had this happen but on a Chev V8 and a new stat fixed it immediately. Cheers, Pete.
