MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Oil Choice Report
| Just to let you all know. Concerned by the high oil pressure and bad rattle on the first few seconds after start up I changed from a cheap 20/50 to Castrol Magnatec (for engine prior to 1990). Now I have hardly any rattling on start up and the engine seems to run a bit cooler. I'm now down to 25 psi on hot idle, but still 55/60 on high revs/acceleration. I'm hoping the oil pump gears being new account for that. So there you go. Thought I's post for posterity. Liam |

| I don't know how things are in the UK but on this side of the pond we must be careful to use engine oils that do not have the energy conserving lable on the API donut. These oils do not contain ZDDP zinc-dialkyl-dithiophosphate. Oil produced without this additive will destroy our flat tappet camshafts. 20-50 Castrol is produced with the additive as are oils used for racing, redline, amsoil, castrol etc. There is no additive that you can use to support your oil without it as oils are blended with it. (its a chemical thing)Just make sure your favorite engine oil is for older cars or high performance and look at the donut on the bottle. |
