MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - MGC Back Axle
Hi All, I may have an option on a MGC back axle. Are there any styles or types I should go for or avoid? Is it likely to need much work/overhauling or does it just depend on the axle? I know very little about C's. Liam.

Hi Liam, I took a 3.3 axle from a C and it works fine with the 175/80 HR 14 tyres. It is the same reduction that was used for the RV8. You can check it out by opening the axle. Have a look upon the diff. There aught to be BTB840 stamped on the ring gear for a 3.3. You should not buy a 3.7 axle (same as MGB automatic). If it is a 3.07 it is ok, these diffs were used for the factory V8 and SOME MGC's. Take care of the differtent with on a ww axle, if it is one of these, you will need the rims of the Scimitar GTE and an additional spacer of 5 mm (Nissan/Honda) on each side to clear the inner wheel arch. The flange of the prop shaft is differnt, a Rover P6B will fit the C axle flange and the LT77 gearbox but has to be shortened and ballanced. Good Luck Ralph

Ralph, that is very useful. Do you know the part number for a 3.07 (and a 3.7) ratio axle? I have to investigate these from a distance.

Hi Liam, here are the part numbers for the Sailsbury axle: 3.070 is BTB900 on diff cage BTB840 3.307 is BTB841 on BTB840 3.700 is BTB1244 on BTB866 3.907 is BTB856 on BTB866 Converting a B 1800 3.9 to another gearing means you will need to have your diff cage machined to fit the C type ring gear. These conversions of an exissting axle is best left to a skilled workshop as very special tools are necessary therefore. Hope this helps, Have a nice weekend Ralph
