MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - MGB T16 conversion
hi all I have owned my 1798 mgbgt for 9 years now she is in fantastic condition but not orginal I have been considering at rover t16 conversion for a while now and after diving the car for a month while my every day car was unwell I realised how much the performnace of modern cars has increased. I am a fairly acomplished diy macanic so the prospect of doing the convsion dosent worry me how ever I would be interested to here from anyone who has done this, I know a few have i would like to know what sort of parts i need to look out for as i will start to collect them up before i take my car to bits regards richard

Richard, although i have not done it, this link will give you a lot of usefull information concernig the installation of a t16 into an MGB: http://www.upgrades4mgs.co.uk As it is not legal to do any changes to the structuer of the front axle here in Germany, i modified my 1798 to a 1868 stage 6 (as discribed in the BMC Special Tuning Manual1) and you can compare it's performance with a modern car fitted with a 1800 or 1900. Although it does not perform as well as my GTV8 (Rover SD1 engined, modified), it is more fun to drive and no changes to the car's structure were necessary. Just follow the link and have a look upon the pics and the articles there and think about it... Ralph

Ralph, I have a question for you regarding suspension. I have a rb from 77 with Rover V8. I plan on converting to IRS and thinking on using the rear end from a Miata (MX-5). The Miata rear end (track)is 10 cm wider than the MGB. I noticed that you have your Sebring GT wider than the normal original MGB dimensions. what is the track distance of the rear end on your car? I wonder if it has any negative handling when the rear track dimension is 10 cm wider than the front track. any input on this subject and anybody that has used a Miata (MX-5) rear end in a MGB ?

Werner, i am running a MGC 3.3 rear end with leave springs, traction bars and Spax shocks in my 1973 V8 converted in the early 80's. As allready posted before, it is not legal in here to modify the suspension of the car to an other system. If it would be allowed, i would try to put a 1980's on Mitsubishi Galant Auto IRS under the B as it is light, has the right wheel studs and disk brakes and seems to be narrower than all the other constructions used by most converters. I do not know enough about the Miata rear axle but the Rover (BPR) V8 does not like the rpm a Mazda engine is capable for and so the ratio should be a problem with the V8. Cheers Ralph
