MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - MGB speed record
I just saw a National Geographic show about Bonneville Speed Week 2006. One of the cars highlighted was a Sunbeam Tiger with a turboed small block Ford trying to get to 203 mph to break a record (for type I presume). I recall MGB made some record runs there. Anyone know what the record is for an MGB? The SCTA site was not clear on this to me as I don't know what class to look for.

Edd, with the 3.5 SD1 and Rover 5-speed and 3.303 rear end on an otherwise stock V8 setup i tried 135 MpH, although the car is able to go faster but on 175/80 tyres? A collegue from the German MG club was mesured @ 240 KpH on a race curcit with his road licensed GT, 4.6 Rover, 5-speed and 3.09 rear end but with 195/55 section tyres. He told that even more would have been possible concerning the engine but who wants to become a dead hero of speed with the limitatins of the setup possible on a B? As far as i know, there have never been official attemps to set a record with a B, neither 4 or 8 cyl. car. During the BMC days they tried to demonstrate durability on ralleys and long distance events but speed records as this was more usefull for their sales marketing. Ralph

Sorry, no mention of the MGB! http://www.landspeedracingmg.com/index.html

Of course the MGA is a different thing - over 250 MPH (OK, the body was non-stock - EX-181). There was also an MGA Twincam that bettered 180 MPH at Bonneville using a larger 4 cylinder Ferrari engine. Best I can do in my modified MGC is 130 MPH. My MGA Twincam race car is good for a bit more than that. God knows what my GM V-6 engine Jamaican is capable of, probably 140+, but I am disinclined to test that lest I discover new adventures in manned flight.....
