MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - MG RV8 Engine Type 48A

Although this question is about the RV8, I wondered whether any of you knowledgeable guys in conversion land might be able to help ...

Does anyone know whether the 48A 3.9 V8 engine (CR 9.35:1) was used in any other vehicle, ie. Land or Range Rover? I've done some research but can't find any mention of it apart from in connection with the MG RV8.

(The full engine number on my RV8 is 48A 01106 A)

If it was developed solely for the RV8, can anyone tell me the engine type number which was closest to it (from which it was developed), and what the differences are? (I presume the remote oil filter housing is one).

Thanks!
S Middlemiss

Although I stand to be corrected, I believe the RV8 engine differs from some or all other 3.9 landrover cars by having:
unique timing cover.
variation on the heater plumbing
sump akin to the GTV8
stylized plenum cover
accelerator linkage

I am not sure which gearbox was in general landrover use and therefore about the compatibility of the backplate/flywheel.

In the most fundamental respect the engine is still a landrover 3.9.

Roger on the gearbox point the LT77 was fitted to the earlier RV8s, and the R380 to the later cars.

The chip in the engine ECU, is straight unmodified Land Rover; this is why rechipping is so productive.

Thanks for the help guys. It seems the 3.9 Range Rover 35D engine is the same as the 48A in the MG RV8, albeit with the smaller sump as in the MGBGTV8/RoverSD1 and a few different ancillaries.

The LT77 was fitted to the MG RV8 up to VIN 0644, then the R380 (first version, suffix J) to the end of production. And, having had mine rechipped by RPi, I can agree with you Nigel!

The water pump was also slightly shorter (and fiendishly expensive!)
