MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - LT77 Gearbox
...selection of 1st and 2nd is a bit stiff when cold. Anyone else ............? This one has 50K on it - some of it heavy towing - a leakey affair from the start. Advice always gratefully received.

Roger, what kind of oil is used in your LT 77? Early SD1 used engine oil but Rover soon changed to ATF to cure the problem with cold shifting. On my LT 77 i first tried engine oil but also changed to ATF. Then the box became leaking and i changed to synthetic Catrol gearbox oil. No problems with shifting or leaks anymore. Ralph

I was having problems with stiff shifting as well. A local V8 guy recommended an oil avaliable at GM dealers that I believe is called "GM/Delco Syncromesh Oil" I have used it in my LT77 gearbox for seveal years and over 10,000 miles with no probems. It is good stuff. fwiw dave

I was recommended to use Redline MTL in the LT77. It has been great straight from cold for the few months I have been using it.

Castrol SMX-S this afternoon - the shift is positive and free - hopefully less leakage although we shall have to give it a fair trial.
