MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - IRS again

Anybody has done the following mods.
Rear end from Miata in a MGB.
Need info please. The ones from the Jaguar seems too complicated.

Werner,

Having considered putting an IRS into a B I looked at the MX5/Miata rear end and in the end decided it was more complicated than a Jag IRS.

The problem with the Mazda is that there are no readily available parts to do the conversion and the crown wheel and pinion is firstly a little on the small side for a V8 and it is difficult to find a ratio that will suit the V8 engine.

The Jag rear has all the parts needed for a swap readily available both here and in the states.

You can ditch the jag cage a buy a crossmember to weld into the B to which the jag diff bolts up to, you then need to have the drive shafts and lower wishbones professionally narrowed and fit new radius rods to triangulate the lower wishbones. You don't want to hang them off the rear spring hangers as this causes bump/rear end steer.

This a conversion that is regularly done by a lot of the hot rod guys so is a proven conversion and the jag rear end will take almosty any amount of power that you can put through it.

The other benefit is complete units can be had very cheaply and various ratios are available and a lot had limited slip diffs.

Alternatively if you want a bolt in conversion then you can buy one from Hoyle but all in it will cost you £3500 + fitting!

If i do an IRS in my car I will definitely use the Jag rear end.

You should allow in your costing a full rebuild of the jag components, I calculated that a fully rebuilt and narrowed Jag rear end and all the parts to fit it would come in at about £1800 including buying the jag rear end itself.

We chose the Jag unit for Project Roadmaster and Jim Blackwood has done a great job of fitting it to the MG shell. The installation is pretty well documented in the British V8 newsletter and forum. http://www.britishv8.org/Articles/MGB-Roadmaster-2.htm
and http://forum.britishv8.org/read.php?2,166,page=1

Jim is going to duplicate the installation for his personal car as well.
