MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Gearbox Oil
Some time ago, I followed the recomandation to use ATF in my LT77 Rover 5 speed gearbox prior to the normal engine oil that was used on the early SD1 gearboxes. Planing to renew the oil now, I think there are some modern synthetic engine oils that would be superior to using ATF again this time. Has anyone tried out 0w60 or something of this kind of synthetics? Ralph

Check out RPI Engineering's website www.v8engines.com for info on using different fluids. They've helped me with some issues with my 3.5 and the LT77 in the past and seem to know their way around the Rover parts. I've been using ATF in my SD1 'box for a year and a half with no problems other than a leak from the shifter o-ring (which I didn't know about when I had the car apart). One day I'll get around to changing it.

Ralph, I’ve been using Castrol SMX-S synthetic for manual transmissions for the last couple of years, much better than ATF, especially with a cold box. And the slight weep from the selector rod o-ring stopped. Geoff

Ralph Have been using ATF (5W20)for some time no issues so reluctant to change. However I would use Geoffs suggestion. The viscosity improvers used for a 0W60 will just shear in a box. Paul

Hi Ralph, I have had very good operating experience with Castrol BOT130M (previously Castrol 3M2). This is a full synthetic 75W/90 gear oil which is a recommended problem solver for heavy loading( racing, towing) as well as for cold shiftability. It might be a bit heavy for European winter,as in Cape Town it rarely gets colder than 8 degrees C. This was the OEM recommended oil for the local Ford Sierra 3.0iRS,which had 5 speed gearbox ( uprated T9 type)problems beforehand. This oil solved them completely. Have used this oil since for thousands of km's in my Rover V8S as well as my MGB V8 conversion( both LT77 boxes.) and have good shiftability into second from cold with reduced layshaft noise in neutral. This oil is superior to the origional spec EP75 gearoil and cetainly to the ATF in later boxes. The only downside is the rather steep price. Best Regards, Tony.
