MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Factory reconditioned engine.

Hi,

Can anyone tell me exactly what/when they did to factory reconditioned engines?

I finally tracked down what my 38A engine number meant which was that it is a factory reconditioned unit.

It might explain why I have no overheating problems at all, also why the oil is still spotless after 400 miles (Mike and Geoff saw this at Harrogate and can testify!)

Snap I have one of those, as far as I can tell they were replacement engines 1986-8 and were probably engines off the production line to replace engines with problems under warranty, they probably just stamped them 38 to indicate they were a replacement.

Had no idea of the mileage of the engine although it ran perfectly well in the donor car, so we stripped it and found it was very clean indicating a good service history, we then gave it a rebuild with new shells, an ARP mains stud kit, the bores were just honed as there was very little wear, new rings fitted to the pistons, new Hurricane cam and lifters, steel timing gear and heads given the Peter Burgess econotune spec, all topped off with an Edelbrock Performer inlet and 500 Carb exhausting through RV8 manifolds and large bore (very loud) single pipe and rear box system, I'm going to add a centre box as it frightens children and horses!

Yep I fitted a centre box, now it's superb, lound V8 when you really push it and burble in cruise mode.
